urner Brangus Ranch is a family owned operation, where it's sole income for the past 43 years has been made by a cow. Prior to 1981 our operation was strictly commercial cattle. Which has been the guidelines, we've used to develop our Purebred Brangus Cattle. Although we've been very progressive in all aspects of the Livestock Business, we still use grass root common sense in selecting our replacements, whether Bulls or Heifers.
Our objective goal is to produce Brangus Cattle that will make you money, as well as make us money. We strive for the best genetics possible to produce offspring that will perform in your environment. Our cattle are not pampered, they have to do it all on their own merits of genetic background. We strive for performance and a strong maternal side. Without a good strong cow you have not much to work with, we maintain good pelvic size for calving ease and we're working hard for the genetics for quality carcass.
EPD'S are always something we take into consideration, although we've found we can be blinded by that as well. We sometimes seek out one attribute only to lose another. So that's why we still use the grass roots, common sense approach, especially to maintain our quality.
We research quite extensively when it comes to our AI Program. We feel through AI we can gain the genetic pool needed for the carcass development. Through Synchronization, we AI approximately 500 cows and heifers per year. And by using the following bloodlines, we're achieving great strides in carcass quality. The two Integrity son's we used, Integrity Debutante 3784/U, and Integrity 533 1580/U gave us some tremendous cows as foundation cattle. The sire of these two son's GLC Integrity 1/3, was the first Certified Brangus Carcass Sire of the Brangus Breed. Other AI sires included in our AI Bull Battery are Idaho Jack S933 who to this day still performance high on the carcass ratings, Big Easy, Bright Side of Brinks, Cowboy of Brinks, Backside of Brinks, Sundance of Brinks, Townsend's Lucky 13, Lucky 94, Lucky 304, and Suhn's Geronimo. This year our new selection added is Black Hawk of Brinks, PR Elixir, Suhn's Picasso, and BT's Summit, which should make for an interesting calf crop. Every year researching the AI sires available requires painstaking time. Although the end results are extremely rewarding, ending up with a superior type animal gives a person such overwhelming satisfaction.
Brangus is a Maternal Bred with Carcass Quality. Turner Brangus cattle may meet the live carcass specifications of the Certified Angus Beef Progam. Other American breeds with Brahman blood might claim their females are just as good as a Brangus, but from our experience this just isn't so. Some have what is, in our opinion, too much Brahman, and none have Angus blood.
The 5/8 Angus in Brangus is the key. And the 3/8 Brahman is just the right amount to take advantage of that breed's pluses.
We know that packers like Angus and the feeders tells us he likes the Brangus-type calf, the one with somewhere between 3/16 and 3/8 Brahman - about 25 percent. We know there is prejudice against too much Brahman.
When Brangus Bulls are used on English or Continental breeds, the resulting offspring will be 3/16 Brahman, the minimum desire by most feeders. If you keep a 3/16 heifer (and they do make excellent replacements) you can breed them to one of the 70 breeds out there, or you can go back on them with Brangus, something we know many cattlemen do with much success. In fact, using registered Brangus bulls on successive offspring will never increase your Brahman percentage above 3/8.
The Brangus sired calves are being well accepted into the Angus Certified Meat Program with much success and with a high percentage of those qualifying.
We appreciate the time you've taken to view our Web Site, and knowing that the Brangus Breed is our #1 Priority, we welcome any and all questions, we feel the Brangus Breed has much to offer the cattle industry and whether your goal is a Hobby Breeder or a Down Right Serious Seedstock Producer, feel free to contact us, we enjoy the conversation, Email us, write, or fax, either way Brangus is our priority and we can make it yours.
